2005 Kona Hoss XC Hardtail 22″ & Gear (Package Deal)

This auction is for a Kona Hoss and all the gear you will need to ride.
The Kona is a 22″ (for a Clydesdale rider). I’m 6’4″ and 275 and it carried/fit me great! It is all stock except for the pedals, grips and bar ends. It’s in like new condition. I’ve put about 100 miles on it, and then my Son was born and it has been sitting for a couple of years. I’ve had it tuned up at the beginning of each summer so that I know it is always ready to ride. It really is a great bike.
The auction includes 2 sets of clipless pedals (one pair is Shimano peds that came on it) and a pair of Pearl Izumi 12.5 shoes. Pedals and shoes are all in great condition.
Also in this auction is a size: Large Bell helmet, the original grips, 3 air pumps (2 handheld & 1 shotgun pump that holds an air canister for instant airing), riding gloves, riding glasses with a case, a headlight, 2 tubes, a Topeka riding computer, the Kona owners manual and the Marzucchi forks owners manual. Also included (but not pictured) is a small cargo bag that velcros to the bottom of the seat for storage.
Starting bid is $1500 and all of this gear is absolutely worth it. The bike alone was $1122.00 (I still have the receipt) and I never bought cheap gear. I will take the bike to a bike shop for packing and shipping. I’m charging $150 for packing and shipping of all items. You will receive 2 boxes… the bike and then the gear.

I upgraded many things on this bike, but do not have time to ride it, so it sits in my garage in very good condition. The parts alone would cost more than I am asking for it.

Scandium TubingIt’s one of our favorites.

Hydroformed Tubing

Hydroformed tubing is a forming technology that uses a liquid to form the shape of a tube and align its grain structure. At Kona we use hydroformed tubing on a variety of our bicycles. Quite simply, the technology delivers on sound structure and ride performance like no other tubing in the world. The process results in a seamless, continuous, aligned piece of metal-right down to the fiber structure itself.

Hydroforming proves especially advantageous at weld points where it can be flared to increase weld areas, essentially, adding strength without adding weight. The result is a strong, flawless frame with great lateral stability, durability and responsiveness.

Kona Walking Beam 4-Bar Linkage System

Since Kona first introduced the platform in 1996, we’ve been refining and honing the most functional, durable and performance-oriented dual suspension platforms ever invented. That’s why you see versions of our 4-Bar linkage on everything from the Hei Hei XC Race bike to our DH Stab Supreme.

Function and Durability
Anytime you have a pivot in anything, there is side-to-side movement, or tolerance. It’s what allows the pivot to move freely. When you have pivots that are close together, like in more complicated multi-pivot designs, the side-to-side movement in those pivots becomes amplified, what’s called tolerance stacking. Kona’s 4-Bar system keeps pivots as far away from each other as possible, thus minimizing tolerance stacking. Ultimately, it equates a stiffer rear end, as well a significant decrease in bearing and bushing wear.

Another benefit of our 4-Bar system is minimized side load on the rear shock. If you’ve got close pivot points and/or the shock positioned so that it is exposed to lateral forces, you’ve got side load on the shock. Side load causes resistance, which negatively impacts suspension performance. Side load also causes premature seal failures.

With our 4-Bar system the rear shock is protected from side-to-side forces. As a result, we have a super low rate of shock problems, as well as a very responsive feel to the rear suspension.
Tunability
4-Bar allows for a rainbow of different suspension characteristics, after all, this is the suspension platform used for F1 racecars. For XC bikes, we can take an inherently progressive air shock and make the suspension more linear, allowing the rider to benefit from all of the bike’s travel. For downhill bikes, like our Stab, an inherently linear coil shock can be set-up to be more progressive for big hits.

Void of gimmicks, with pivots, bearings and the shock itself well supported, Kona’s Walking Beam 4-Bar Linkage System delivers that beautiful, super plush feel we all crave as mountain bikers. Whether it’s taking the edge of a technical XC race course, the burl out of a backcountry all-day epic, or smoothing the brake bumps at your local bike park, our 4-Bar suspension designs deliver bomber plushness, ride in, ride out.

Sloping Top Tube

As the pioneer of sloping top tubes in mountain bike frame design, we’ve since stayed true to all the many positives this design technology brings to the trail.

First, it allows the top tube to be longer, providing more room for correct positioning and free body movement. Second, it also allows for more standover clearance, critical on dual suspension bikes due to a higher bottom bracket. Vertically, the frame is more compliant, allowing it to absorb more shock than frames with horizontal top tubes. It also puts the rider in a more secure position for downhill sections of trail.

Magnesium Rockers

Magnesium is the perfect metal for use in applications where stiffness and weight are crucial. At Kona, many of our rear suspension rocker plates are made of magnesium for improved suspension performance, efficiency and low weight.

Internal Headset

By having the headset bearing located inside the heat tube, rather than the top and bottom, you’re able to achieve a whole array of advantages when it comes to front end stiffness and overall performance. With an internal headset, the head tube is able to take the stress directly, resulting in less play, stronger, improved ride characteristics, and better bearing performance. Basically, like a good friend, an internal headset is sharing the load, every molecule in the materials taking the load more equally.

Asymmetrical Chainstays

Unbeknownst to most of us, when we torque on the pedals, not only are we propelling the bike forward, we’re also pulling the rear wheel over to the drivetrain side of the bicycle. It is the one element of bike design that’s not in perfect balance.

Asymmetrical stays help to stiffen the rear end. The drive-side stay is straight, while the non-drive takes advantage of no chain rings and chain, incorporating a better structure to improve rear end stiffness. By putting strength where it is needed, pedaling stiffness is greatly increased.

Lurking in the shadows of the Magic-Link is Kona’s less elaborate
trail-offering; the Tanuki. Meaning a mythical Japanese hound with big
balls, the Tanuki sticks to Kona’s suspension lineage with a
single-pivot and rocker link actuated shock.

Both the top and down tube are curved, the former to increase
standover and the latter for greater crown clearance. The head tube is
tapered, there’s room for a water bottle and cage and the 30.9 seat tube
will accept most ejector seatposts.

Kona has always built its bikes in a comprehensive range of sizes,
and the Tanuki is no different in this respect. Available in 15in, 16in,
17in, 18in, 19in, 20in and 22in something is very wrong if you can’t
get comfortable on a Tanuki.

We rode an 18in, which had plenty of standover height, but also
benefited from a very long wheelbase; something we were really glad of
bombing down a Swiss mountain at 30mph. Kona claims a 68 degree head
angle for the Tanuki, and we measured the 18in bike as having 16.8in
(427mm) chainstays, a 26.5in (673mm) down tube and the aforementioned
massive 45.5in (1156mm) wheelbase. Only the lofty 13.9in (355mm) bottom
bracket spoiled the party. Kona could easily dump the Tanuki a good 10mm
and look down on some of its competitors.

The shock might look like a Fox Float RP2, but it is in fact an own
brand shock, built by the factory that makes the frame. According to
Kona it has a larger oil volume than an RP2, and has had considerable
work over the last year tuning it to the frame.

With thin-wall, shallow-treaded Maxxis Ardent tyres, a narrow bar, an
unknown shock and only 130mm of travel available, a run of the Black
trail felt like a pretty stupid thing to do. But, we figured, if it
could survive the jagged rocks, high speed washboard, big jumps and deep
compressions it could handle anything. By the second corner the Tanuki
had surpassed all of my expectations in spectacular fashion. I was
keeping up with riders on downhill bikes, hitting all the jumps and
drops and effectively abusing a trail bike like it should never be
treated.

While the head angle isn’t especially slack, the long wheelbase meant
stability was never a problem. Only under braking into tight corners
did the trail-friendly head angle become a problem. Wrestling the front
end through slower speed rock gardens revealed some chassis flex, but
only in situations most cross-country bikes would rarely encounter.

The final surprise came from the rear shock. Despite being pounded
for upwards of five minutes, the damping never faded and I was able to
hit high-speed jumps without fear of getting bucked.

It’s often the small dogs that have the biggest balls, fearing little
and never backing away from a fight no matter how big the challenge.
With the Tanuki it’s a similar story. To look at it’s nothing special,
but in action it packs a surprising punch.

This is my bike review for the Kona Tanuki 2012 Bike.

Have you been a fan of the Tanuki?
Well this year you will not be let down. The latest version The Tanuki
2012 Bike corrected a few issues from the 2011 model and they have
enhanced a few other features.
One of the biggest changes was in The rear shock. They have reworked it
with a larger oil reserve. It has the appearance of a fox shock, but

Strengths: Suspension geometry seems nice. Brakes work well. Entry level model of the Tanuki has good components for the price.

Weaknesses: Kind
of heavy. Lightened up when i put Easton EA70XC wheels and 2.1″ wide
tires. Pedals it comes with are horrible, but i upgraded to the Kona Wah
Wahs.

Bottom Line: For the price, i do not think you can find anything with better components.

Strengths: Frame
is bullet proof. Shocks are supple, good position for descending, fork
lockout has give for unexpected bumps, tyres grip well on loose, feels
lighter than it is

Weaknesses: Not so great on the climb, came with shock and fork under pumped, strange frame shape prevents it sitting nicely on bike rack

Bottom Line: Amazing
bike, have had hard tails that dont climb this well (shock has to be
locked or you bounce lots) and the tires soak up almost everything you
throw at them, totally recommend this product. You will want to use this
if you like heavy cross country/trail riding, would do some freeride or
down hill even with the heavy duty tyres, but not too much.

Over the past 10 years Kona has invested heavily in Scandium
technology. Known to be one of the lightest and strongest metals in the
world, with superior riding characteristics, it’s no surprise we use
Scandium throughout our entire line of bicycles.

Scandium is a potent grain refiner that, when added to aluminum alloys,
elevates the strength and durability of the material by 50%. It
accomplishes this by aligning the grains of the alloy, making the metal

Hydroformed Tubing
Hydroformed tubing is a forming technology that uses a liquid to form
the shape of a tube and align its grain structure. At Kona we use
hydroformed tubing on a variety of our bicycles. Quite simply, the
technology delivers on sound structure and ride performance like no
other tubing in the world. The process results in a seamless,
continuous, aligned piece of metal-right down to the fiber structure
itself.

Hydroforming proves especially advantageous at weld points where it can
be flared to increase weld areas, essentially, adding strength without
adding weight. The result is a strong, flawless frame with great lateral
stability, durability and responsiveness.

Sloping Top Tube

For the mid-to-long travel range of dual suspension mountain bikes,
like our all new Backcountry Cadabra series, and our existing
Out-of-Bounds CoilAir series, bikes designed to both climb and descend
exceptionally well-not to mention accelerate, corner, even jump, without
using any gimmicks or external adjustments to change suspension virtues
or geometry, Magic Link is the answer.

Imagine a mid-to-long travel bike that’s designed to excel when it’s
climbing or pedaling really hard: nice linear rear travel with steeper
head and seat angles and a more upright riding position.

Now imagine that same bike when it’s going downwards, braking or
hitting big bumps. Not ideal. Well, imagine that same bike with the
ability to change its rear travel: more progressive, with softer
suspension in the initial stages of travel. Not only that, imagine the
travel on this bike could lengthen, while its geometry changed to
slacker head and seat angles, with an improved wheel path.

Keep in mind these aren’t two separate modes. The Magic Link is
constantly reacting to all of the forces acting on it, and it’s not like
an on/off switch. It’s never “stuck” in one mode. It just does what you
need. Sometimes it is in-between modes, or cycling between modes, but
there’s no sudden feeling of change, such as an abrupt alteration of the
bike’s geometry. The rider is unaware of what’s going on, just having

Asymmetrical Chainstays

Unbeknownst to most of us, when we torque on the pedals, not only are we
propelling the bike forward, we’re also pulling the rear wheel over to
the drivetrain side of the bicycle. It is the one element of bike design
that’s not in perfect balance.

Asymmetrical stays help to stiffen the rear end. The drive-side stay is
straight, while the non-drive takes advantage of no chain rings and
chain, incorporating a better structure to improve rear end stiffness.
By putting strength where it is needed, pedaling stiffness is greatly
increased.

Compact Rear Triangle

Short chain stays and seat stays provide a perfect balance of stability
and power transfer when out of the saddle and hammering. Shorter seat
stays also have less deflection during braking and accelerate quicker
than longer stays.

Tapered Head Tube

You’ll notice many of Kona’s Backcountry and Out-of-Bounds bikes, like
our Dawgs and CoilAirs, now come with a tapered head tube: 1 1/8-inches
at the top, 1.5-inches at the bottom. For bikes using suspension forks,
especially longer travel models, a tapered head tube provides more
support at the intersection of the top tube and down tube. In short,
more diameter equates to a stronger weld surface.

In addition, more girth at the bottom of the head tube better
distributes shock force, prolonging headset bearing life. Thanks to a
bigger bearing where most of the stress is located, the design also
allows for a stronger steering position, improving balance and giving
the rider more control in rough terrain.

Up for auction is my 2005 Kona The King race machine. I built this bike as a race specific bike, and used it for about 5 prerides and 5 races. It has been hanging in my garage for about 4 years now (since I stopped mountain bike racing and took up road racing) and it needs to go to a good home where it will be well cared for.
2005 Kona The King with Fox RP3 shock, 2.5″ travel, 17″ frame, Scandium aluminum alloy with carbon seat stays.
2005 Mavic Crossmax Wheels (tubeless compatible, valves not included, currently set up with tubes.)
Marzocchi Bomber AM 85-130mm adjustable fork, rebound and compression damping both adjustable.
Race Face Ride XC triple cranks (octalink) with Shimano BB
Sram X.9 triggers (9 speed)
Sram X.0 rear dereailleur, long cage (9 speed)

This bike is in near perfect condition and has only been ridden a dozen times. I have just gotten a tune up on the bike to make sure everything is working for you to hit the trail with. Going to try downhill/little tougher riding and need to get a different bike. This bike is also a little to big for me to ride as I am hunched over. There is a rock chip on the one crank, no problems with them.Bike has new set of handlebars, there are some scratches on the stem, Also a brand new Cannondale Quick seat that is a 60 dollar value, and is litterally brand new!!!! Couple other little chips as well on the bottom of the frame. Shipping was quoted at $100-125 for shipping. Overall the bike is in great condition and has been well taken of.
